Dixon runs rampant on Greenbrier freshmenBy Kris Freeman
White House FootballBig plays and aggressive defense was enough for the White House Blue Devils to extend a freshman streak to six unbeaten games in 2006, notching a 44-14 victory Thursday night over Greenbrier at home.
Bryan Dixon rushed seven times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, both long runs at 50 and 62 yards, as White House built a 36-0 lead against the Bobcats. Dixon also set up the second touchdown of the game with an interception near midfield and a 28-yard return, and added a 38-yard kick return for 206 all-purpose yards.
White House moved to 6-0 for the season and will take the scheduled day off with an open date this Thursday.
The Blue Devils held Greenbrier to 160 yards on 41 plays, with seven tackles for losses and a sack added by Rob Poindexter. Greenbrier was 4-of-10 on third down and 2-of-2 on fourth down, but punted three times, while White House made all three third down attempts and scored every time it had the football - except the last drive of the game to run out the clock.
Even on that drive, an 80-yard kickoff return by Cody Durham for a touchdown was called back for an illegal block in the back.
White House rushed 22 times for 270 yards and quarterback Aussie Light completed all three of his passes for 34 yards. Zach Byrd rushed five times for 46 yards, Jacob Upchurch added four carries for 29 yards, and Cody Adair once for 25. Light carried three times for 20 yards and fullback Shawn Goode twice for 10.
Greenbrier opened the game with a short six-play series, and after a punt White House took over at their own 36. Dixon rushed for four, Light completed to Jeff Edgar for eight, then Byrd added two on a short carry to midfield, before Dixon bolted outside left for a 50-yard touchdown. Edgar's rush attempt was good for an 8-0 lead.
Dixon intercepted the Bobcats on a third-down pass, after tackles for losses by Will Banks, Chance Bergeron and Byrd forced 3rd-and-13. Dixon's return to the 16 set up a 16-yard pass to Poindexter from Light, but the pass attempt failed on the conversion for the 14-0 score.
White House forced a three-and-out and Dixon on the first play struck for 62 yards through the center of the line for a score, and Light ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-0 edge in the first quarter.
Greenbrier kept it six plays, but Light captured the quarterback on a four-yard loss on the fourth play, setting up a punt which Jacob Upchurch returned 49 yards to the Greenbrier 25. On the fifth play of the Blue Devil series, Light completed his second touchdown of the game, this time hitting Upchurch for 10 yards. Light was stopped inches short of the pylon for the two-pointer to maintain a 28-0 lead.
White House opened the second half with a 25-yard return by Byrd, and he completed the march two plays later with consecutive runs of 15 and 25 yards for a touchdown. Edgar's second rushing attempt for two was good for the 36-0 lead.
Greenbrier marched nine plays and 53 yards, scoring on a 15-yard run on third down and the quarterback ran in the two-pointer to make it 36-8 in the third quarter.
Upchurch completed the night of big plays with a 28-yard rush to the endzone and Byrd cashed in the two-point attempt for a 44-8 edge. The drive was set up by Dixon's 38-yard return and covered 46 yards in six plays.
Greenbrier moved the football 11 plays and 75 yards to tack a late touchdown on the board, but Chase Vaughn snuffed out the two-point play with a tackle for loss, making the 44-14 final.
White House got the football back one final time, but the kickoff return was called back on a flag and the Blue Devils ran out the clock.
The Blue Devils were led defensively by Zach Byrd with nine tackles and Will Banks' seven. Taylor Parks added six stops with Chase Vaughn and Brooks Wade making four tackles in the game. Byrd and Parks each had two tackles for losses.
