White House FootballThough it's a completely different squad, the White House Blue Devils freshman team started right where it left off.
Fresh off an undefeated campaign by the last group, the current Blue Devil freshmen jumped out to a 2-0 opening to the 2006 season with dominating victories over Station Camp, 46-14, and Hendersonville, 34-0.
Against the Commandos, it was big plays - with all five scores over 20 yards out. Rob Poindexter opened the scoring in the first period with an athletic 32-yard reception from Aussie Light, but the two-point conversion failed for a 6-0 lead.
Jeff Edgar leaped a defender on a 20-yard run for a 12-0 score, then Jacob Upchurch bolted through the middle of the line for a 51-yard punt return for an 18-0 edge at the break.
Bryan Dixon, who rushed for 92 yards in the game, broke loose for 27 yards in the third quarter, with Zach Byrd scoring on the two-point conversion run for a 26-0 advantage. Upchurch capped the scoring with a 52-yard run from quarterback in the fourth quarter, with Cody Adair adding the two-point run for the 34-0 final.
White House rushed for 227 yards in the game, with Light passing 2-of-5 for 40 yards and an interception to add. But Hendersonville struggled to move the football, gaining just 53 yards on 29 plays and forced to punt six times. The Commandos only had two first downs in the game.
The Blue Devils were 4-of-9 on third down and 3-of-4 on fourth down, but Hendersonville converted just 1-of-8 of its third down plays.
Upchurch rushed for 59 yards in the game and Zach Byrd added 29 on 10 carries. Byrd was the leading tackler on defense with six stops.
